Outlook Settings and Configuration
Outlook is Microsoft's own email client.
How To Edit Account Settings
- Go to File in the Menu Bar at the top.
- Now select Info from the menu on the left.
- Next, in the main part of the window, there is a squarish button that says Account Settings.
- You'd think that would be all, but it isn't. That buttons opens a little panel with a second Account Settings button. Click that.
- Now the REAL Account Settings Panel will open!
- If you want to edit an account's settings, make sure you are in the E-mail tab, and click on the account (email address) you wish to edit.
- Just above the list of email addresses is a little toolbar. Click on the Change... button.
If you want to delete (remove) an account, look for the Remove button in the little toolbar.
How Do I Add an Account?
Outlook has a wizard to do this, but it doesn't work very well, and is slow and cumbersome to work with. Your better bet is to configure things manually - but don't worry, this is not
difficult - plus, we have provided all the directions and screenshots for you below.
- Go to File in the Menu Bar at the top.
- Now select Info from the menu on the left.
- Next, in the main part of the window, push the little Add Account button with the green "plus" sign.
- The Add New Account window will appear. Make sure you select E-mail Account.
- Fill the in the necessary information. Remember that your password is case-sensitive.
- Click Next.
- Now you need to follow the directions on this page to create either a POP account or an IMAP account.
Or, you can proceed as if you were going to edit an account and then click New.... Then you have to
follow the directions on this page to create either a POP account or an IMAP account.
How To Configure Outlook for use with Google Mail
Now, before you can configure your Outlook to work with Google Mail, you first have to tell Google Mail to allow that. If you haven't already done so, please read
this article: Configure Google Mail To Allow Other Clients. If you don't do this, no matter how many times
you enter or change your password, it won't work, and you will be left bewildered feel rather menaced, and Outlook won't tell you what the matter is.
Configuring Outlook with a POP account
To set up your POP account in Outlook:
- Follow the directions (above) to either add or edit an Outlook account.
- Next fill in all the blanks with the corresponding info (see screenshots below).
- Remember that your password IS case-sensitive.
- Check the box for Test Account Settings....

Then click on the More Settings... button. This will open up the "Internet E-mail Settings" window.
- You can fill in the Organization and Reply E-mail now.
- Go to the next tab in that panel, it reads: "Outgoing Server".
- Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
- Also make sure to mark Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- You can skip over the "Connection" tab unless you are using dial-up.

Now, go to the "Advanced" tab. This is the important one where we configure Outlook to be able to send mail. (Look at these screenshots, too.)
- For Incoming server (POP3):, use 995.
- Check the box for This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL).
- Make sure that Outgoing server (SMTP) says 465.
- Now, for Use the following type of encrypted connection, make sure it says SSL. You will have issues if you don't set this correctly.
- That's it. Now click OK to exit the "Internet E-mail Settings" window.
- If you have edited an existing account, you can exit the "Account Settings" Window too - just click the "Close" button. If you are adding an account, you will be back at the
"Add New Account Window" - in the latter case, push the "Next >" button.
- The "Test Account Settings" window will open and Outlook will test your settings to assure it is able to send and receive mail.

Click "Close" to exit the testing window, and then "Finish" to complete the wizard."
Outlook should now go and fetch your mail.
Configuring Outlook for IMAP
To set up your IMAP account in Outlook:
- Follow the directions (above) to either add or edit an Outlook account.
- Next fill in all the blanks with the corresponding info (see screenshots below).
- Remember that your password IS case-sensitive.
- Check the box for Test Account Settings....

Then click on the More Settings... button. This will open up the multi-tabbed "Internet E-mail Settings" window.
- In the "General" tab, the first box is just the name of the account as it appears in Outlook. Only you will see this, and only in Outlook.
- You can fill in the Organization and Reply E-mail now.
- Go to the next tab in that panel, it reads: "Outgoing Server".
- Make sure that My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is checked.
- Also make sure to mark Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- You can skip over the "Connection" tab unless you are using dial-up.

- There are two comboboxes that have the caption: Use the following type of encrypted connection, make both of them say SSL.

That's it. Now click OK to exit the "Internet E-mail Settings" window.

Configuring Outlook for SMTP
SMTP settings are configured right alongside the mailbox settings. They are described in the POP section above, but are standard configuration settings, as
are described HERE.
Note: You can actually use TLS instead of SSL for your SMTP, but that protocol will require you to use port 587 instead of 465.
